Blepharoplasty

BLEPHAROPLASTY is the surgical procedure that allows to correct the excess skin of the heavy eyelids and the bags of fat herniated from inside the orbit. Depending on the clinical case, the intervention may be limited to the removal of excess skin, or extend to the elimination of deep fat pads and the reorganization of the orbital muscles, until it is possible to modify the "cut" of the eye. However, the small periorbital wrinkles called "crow's feet" are not erased, but only improved by the effect of stretching the skin.
Blepharoplasty can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids, even at the same time.
Minimal scars remain during surgery; in correspondence of the upper eyelid the scar is located, for about two thirds of its length, at the bottom of the furrow that is formed when opening the eyes, while for a third it extends laterally and will therefore be visible, but camouflaged, after a few days, with a corrector. Similarly, in the lower eyelid the scar is located under the eyelid edge and protrudes laterally for about one cm.
Blepharoplasty, usually done under local anesthesia, may sometimes require sedation or general anesthesia, with a 1-day hospitalization. The type and frequency of dressings, as well as the time of stitch removal, depend on the individual clinical case and the technique used. The result, slightly altered by the inevitable post-operative swelling and bruising, tends to stabilize within a few weeks. The surgery does not interfere in the least with the visual abilities.

BEFORE BLEPHAROPLASTY OPERATION:

* Inform the surgeon of any treatment with drugs (especially cortisone, antihypertensive, cardioactive, anticoagulant, hypoglycemic, antibiotic, tranquilizer, sleeping pill, stimulant, etc.)
* Report the presence of eye diseases (eg glaucoma, dryness, autoimmune diseases). Eventually undergo an eye examination.
* Eliminate or reduce smoking at least one week before surgery. Immediately report the onset of colds, sore throat, cough, skin diseases.

* Get a pair of sunglasses, useful for masking the inevitable periocular bruising.

ON THE EVE OF BLEPHAROPLASTY INTERVENTION:

  • Practice a thorough cleaning bath; wash the hair; remove nail polish from fingernails and toenails; thoroughly remove make-up from the entire face, paying particular attention to removing mascara from the lashes.

  • Do not eat or drink, starting from midnight, if the operation is performed under general anesthesia.

AFTER THE BLEPHAROPLASTY INTERVENTION:

  • Upon discharge, be accompanied home by car.

  • Rest a few hours with ice packs on the eyes and forehead.

  • Do not wear contact lenses or force your sight for at least 10 days. Keep your eyes clean with 3% boric solution. It is advisable to protect the orbital region all day with a pair of glasses, better if smoked and wide, which will also be very useful for immediately resuming social contacts.

  • The hair can be washed from the second post-operative day, avoiding wetting the area around the eyes. After removing the stitches, you can put on make-up. Any aesthetic treatments of the skin of the face can only be practiced with the consent of the surgeon.

  • It is advisable to sleep on the back until the stitches are removed.

  • For at least 1 month avoid direct exposure to the sun or intense heat (e.g. sauna, UVA lamp)
